My name is Jana Stotler and my husband, Tom, and I are originally from the west – Colorado for him and Colorado by way of Wyoming for me. In February of 2009, Tom, and I decided that we were going to move to Costa Rica permanently. We visited Costa Rica regularly since 1999 and fell in love with the country – particularly the birds and the monkeys and sloths. In May, 2009 we traveled to Puerto Viejo and bought our dream house – two bedrooms and two baths with an outdoor living room. We went back in February, 2010 for two weeks and stayed at the house and knew we had made the right choice. On August 13, 2010, we arrived in Puerto Viejo to live permanently in our new home. We have a three minute walk to the beach and a ten minute walk to town. Toucans and hawks and other birds greeted us every morning and evening and we see the neighborhood sloth nearly every day. Our dogs, siberian huskies named Kaya and Wiley, moved with us. In April, 2011, we acquired another dog that we named Sofi who had been abandoned at only six weeks old. We found her in a ditch and brought her home. So now, the five of us are living our dream and have absolutely no regrets. It is a good life………….
Hi there! I stumbled across your blog “Puerto Viejo we’re here” when I googled “living in Puerto Viejo”. I myself am thinking about moving to Puerto Viejo (only for a few months) and thought it would be a good idea to do a little research. Once I started reading I couldn’t stop, and was directed to this site. First I want to say thank you for sharing your experience with the rest of the world and second I wanted to say “what a small world”! I too am from the NW 🙂 I live in Portland, OR (born and raised) and am thinking about moving to PV in hopes of improving my spanish. Any advice/ words of wisdom from one north westerner to another?
Pura vida 🙂
Hi,
Can you please send me the link so I can subscribe to an RSS feed of your blog? Or even email. I’m not very diligent about checking blogs unless they show up with little or no effort on my part. 🙂
Just happened on your blog from Moved to Costa Rica.
My comment wasnt to steer you away from PV, its a bueftiaul and fun place, but it is a very small town and for a small town, but i couldnt tell you all the horror stories i know- reality is people do target there and if you for some random random reason have to go to limon, then get out before it gets dark- ive had many costa rican friends get robbed on that stretch- in the daytime its fine, but anything can happen in pv at night(like most places, but its very small again and the cops suck
Thanks for sharing your experiences, I love reading about what’s going on! I plan to get to PV, Costa Rica in July for 6 months and I’m really excited. I do have a couple of questions I was wondering if you could help me with. As a dog lover myself I was planning to bring my dogs with me. I thought I knew what was required, but was informed by an airline that I would need to get a broker to get my dogs through customs and out of the airport. Could you share with me the procedure you went through to get your dog family safely from the U.S. to Costa Rica? Thank you so much!
Hello there!
My boyfriend and I are planning a move to Costa Rica later this year (we are also from Colorado – Parker/Castle Rock). Would it be possible for me to contact you directly via email to ask for your experiences with regard to moving your dogs with you? I’d so appreciate some advice regarding some questions I have.
Thank you so much 🙂

I came across your page as I was researching places in CR to live part-time. My husband and I have a little girl and a pug (who absolutely loves the beach!) Seeing your blog is inspiring and I would love to hear more about Puerto Viejo. If you happen to have some time I would love to connect with you through email. Take care!!
